Also included in the extensive line up of projects participating in the upcoming industry incubator organized by the Doha Film Institute is the follow up by Algerian helmers Damien Ounouri and Adila Bendimerad to their award winning epic ‘The Last Queen’, as well as Suzannah Mirghani’s highly anticipated feature debut ‘Cotton Queen’.
There is much to love at this year’s Qumra event, held by the Doha Film Institute. And that’s even before one sets foot on idyllic Qatar during a week of intensely meaningful meetings, chanceful encounters and magical meals, surrounded by the cinematic community the DFI always manages to bring together.
The 11th edition of Qumra, Doha Film Institute’s (DFI) annual talent incubator for Arab and international cinema, is set to provide 49 exceptional projects by emerging filmmakers from over 20 countries with invaluable support and guidance. This year’s diverse selection includes 16 projects by Qatari and Qatar-based filmmakers, highlighting the growing strength of the nation’s creative industry.
As a one-of-a-kind initiative, Qumra offers mentorship, skills development, and network-building opportunities, empowering filmmakers to bring their visions to life. Participants will engage in in-depth activities with Qumra Masters and leading industry experts, with in-person sessions taking place in Doha from April 4 to 9, followed by online sessions from April 12 to 14. Yours truly is the program’s press mentor and I look forward to meeting up with selected projects to provide them with the tools they need to face the ever-increasingly more aggressive media.
Qumra Masters, a big part of the overall experience during the event, were already announced at the end of February.
Among the projects I’m excited to experience first hand, or rather hear about from the filmmakers involved, are Algerian director Sofia Djama’s Quarter to Thursday, Larissa Sansour’s dystopian Palestinian thriller In Memory of Times to Come and Tunisian helmer Erige Sehiri’s Marie & Jolie. But that’s just off reading the list for the first time! Then there are more and more titles that I simply cannot wait to watch on the big screen — although will have to, as some ore in development.
In fact, Djama’s absurdist tale is one of the above in the early stages and the Algeria, France, Qatar co-production deals with three friends on a mission to bury a dachshund in a military zone. The award winning Algerian filmmaker’s 2017 feature film debut, The Blessed world premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and featured an impressive cast which included Nadia Kaci, Sami Bouajila, Adam Bessa, Lyna Khoudri and Faouzi Bensaïdi.
The Joyful 1926, from Algeria, France, Qatar and directed by Algerian real life couple Damien Ounouri and Adila Bendimerad is also in development and follows the story of a vibrant community in Algiers during a pivotal year of social and political change, capturing the resilience and hope of its inhabitants.

Among the documentaries in development is Speak Image, Speak a Palestine, Germany, Qatar co-production by Pary El-Qalqili. The filmmaker’s previous feature is called The Turtle’s Rage and presented a daughter’s torn biography of her father, who was affected tremendously by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This latest projects promises to challenge the distorted portrayal of Palestinians from the imagery of the 1972 Munich Olympics as a starting point.
Currently in production is In Memory of Times to Come from Palestine, Denmark, Malta, UK, Belgium and Qatar. This dystopian sci-fi project by Larissa Sansour is about a utopian social experiment that has erased historical trauma from memory. But someone wants Alia, the film’s protagonist, to remember.
Sari & Amira is by Qatari filmmaker A.J. Al-Thani and follows the adventures of an outlaw Bedouin bandit couple who, while navigating the unforgiving sands of Wadi Sakheema, discover a mythical relic that holds the key to their survival but also awakens ancient forces that could destroy them and their world. Al-Thani is always one to watch, as her ideas are outside the box.
Among the feature docs in production is Flower of the Sand from Morocco, Qatar, directed by Jaouad Babili. This true story about a courageous woman in her fifties, who opens a café in "Sarka," near Dakhla, following the destruction of undocumented fishing boats by authorities sounds intriguing.
Suzannah Mirghani’s project Cotton Queen, from Sudan, Germany, France, Palestine, Egypt and Qatar, is in post-production/picture lock. The film has been delayed by the civil war in Sudan and finally filmed this past year. The story is about Nafisa, who was raised on her grandmother’s stories of battling British colonizers, as she sets out to save the cotton fields from a modern threat.
Marie & Jolie, from Tunisia, France, Qatar, is the latest project by Tunisian director and writer Erige Sehiri, who was in Cannes in 2021 with Under the Fig Trees, a narrative that felt very much like a documentary. This upcoming project, at Qumra in post production/picture lock, follows three Ivorian women from different generations—a pastor, a resourceful businesswoman, and a student who live together in a house in Tunis that doubles as a church. I interviewed Sehiri in 2023 for Screen when the project participated in the Atlas Workshops.
Also in post production is The President's Cake, an Iraq, Qatar co-production. Written and directed by Hasan Hadi, the film narrates the story of nine-year-old Lamia, who must use her wits to gather ingredients for the mandatory cake to celebrate President Saddam Hussein's birthday.
Among the docs in post production/picture lock is Souraya Mon Amour a Lebanon, Qatar co-production directed by Nicolas Khoury. The film provides an introspection into the life of multidisciplinary artist Souraya Baghdadi through her relationship with the filmmaker Maroun Baghdadi.
